Setting out and using quotations

When it comes to quoting, it’s best to start by defining your overall pricing strategy. When you’ve learnt a quote keep going back to it to remind yourself of it. So, don’t learn a quote this week and then forget about it until the week of the exam. Instead, make sure you read it through 2-3 times per week to keep it fresh in your memory. For each of the key words in a quote think of a visual image that ties groups of these words together. Today I’m going to give you some tips and suggestions about how to memorise quotes for your closed book English exam in a manageable, and maybe even a fun (!) way.

Direct quotations only offer support or evidence for a writer’s unique ideas. There are various reasons to use direct quotations in academic writing.


They should not serve to relay the company boilerplate or a long string of figures. Remember, the quote is the one part of your press release that definitely needs to sound like it comes from a human. If you’re addressing a journalist audience, understand that a well-worded quote could be used as part of their headline, a cross-head, as part of the body copy, an image caption, a pull-quote. The quote is the only part of your press release that journalists can’t change. Writers use quotations to support arguments, analyze text, and enrich fiction.

  1. You need to include abrief citation in the text at the place where you refer to the source, and afull citation in your bibliography or reference list.
  2. Using direct quotes in your writing improves your work and shows evidence of research and ideas in your assessments.
  3. A pithy or startling one-liner is ideal, and I would certainly keep it to a couple of sentences max.
  4. As a general guideline, quotes should take up no more than 5–10% of your paper.
  5. In the text, for example, you might have included the tables / graphs that give the results of your analyses.
  6. What you don’t want is for all your hard work to fail, just because the customer has already gone with a competitor, quicker off the mark.

Trying to link unrelated ideas because they sound good in isolation won’t help you draw accurate conclusions, and could negatively impact your assessment. Using quotes properly will support your points and improve your assignments. Use quotes that back up your argument rather than quotes that ‘look good’ or sound impressive.

However, it’s true that successful businesses usually make a higher margin on fixed price bids so in some trades you can argue that the client is likely to pay less if they accept this approach.

Alternatively, you could come up with an action for each of the key words. I just want to issue a word of warning with this revision technique though…. Often when things are on the walls in your environment you stop noticing them. Are there pictures on the wall in your bedroom that you haven’t looked at properly in ages?
